How to use these

Don't just check whether you got the letter right — the CCP rewards reasoning, not recall, especially in scenario-style questions. For each one below, try to explain why the wrong options are wrong before reading the explanation. That habit is what separates candidates who plateau at 60% from those who clear 70%. Each question maps to a real domain from the CCP syllabus — knowing the weighting tells you where to focus.

Question 1 — Managing Project Costs (Domain 1)

Quick answer: A project has a Budget at Completion (BAC) of $2,000,000. At the current status date, the Earned Value (EV) is $800,000 and the Actual Cost (AC) is $1,000,000. What is the Cost Performance Index (CPI), and what does it indicate?

A) CPI = 1.25 — under budget
B) CPI = 0.80 — over budget
C) CPI = 1.00 — on budget
D) CPI = 0.80 — under budget

Correct answer: B. CPI = EV ÷ AC = $800,000 ÷ $1,000,000 = 0.80. A CPI below 1.0 means you're spending more than the value of work performed — the project is over budget, not under. Option D gets the number right but the interpretation backwards — exactly the kind of trap the real exam sets, and exactly why memorising the formula isn't enough; you need the direction of the inequality cold.

Question 2 — Performance Measurement / Analysis (Domain 4)

Quick answer: Using the same project (BAC $2,000,000, EV $800,000, AC $1,000,000, Planned Value (PV) $900,000), what is the Schedule Performance Index (SPI), and what does it tell a project controls professional?

A) SPI = 0.89 — the project is ahead of schedule
B) SPI = 1.13 — the project is behind schedule
C) SPI = 0.89 — the project is behind schedule
D) SPI cannot be calculated from this data

Correct answer: C. SPI = EV ÷ PV = $800,000 ÷ $900,000 = 0.89. Below 1.0 means less work has been completed than planned by this point — the project is behind schedule. Note this question deliberately reused the earlier scenario's numbers: on the real exam, several questions often draw from one scenario block, which is exactly why reading the full scenario once, carefully, saves time across multiple questions.

Question 3 — Risk Management Process (Domain 6)

Quick answer: A risk has a 30% probability of occurring and, if it occurs, would cost the project $150,000. What is the Expected Monetary Value (EMV) of this risk, and how should it typically be treated in the project's contingency reserve?

A) EMV = $45,000 — included in contingency reserve
B) EMV = $150,000 — included in contingency reserve
C) EMV = $45,000 — included in management reserve
D) EMV = $50,000 — included in contingency reserve

Correct answer: A. EMV = probability × impact = 0.30 × $150,000 = $45,000. Identified, quantifiable risks like this feed the contingency reserve (owned by the project team); management reserve is held for unknown-unknowns and controlled at a higher level. Mixing these two up is one of the most common scoring losses in the risk domain.

Question 4 — Scheduling Process (Domain 5)

Quick answer: An activity has an Early Start (ES) of day 10, Early Finish (EF) of day 18, Late Start (LS) of day 14, and Late Finish (LF) of day 22. What is the Total Float, and is this activity on the critical path?

A) Float = 4 days — not on the critical path
B) Float = 0 days — on the critical path
C) Float = 8 days — not on the critical path
D) Float = 4 days — on the critical path

Correct answer: A. Total Float = LS − ES (or equivalently LF − EF) = 14 − 10 = 4 days. Any positive float means the activity is not on the critical path — only activities with zero float are critical. The CCP exam doesn't expect you to build networks from scratch, but it does expect fluent float and critical-path logic, since Domain 5 questions are compact and often exactly this format.

Question 5 — Interfacing with Other Disciplines (Domain 2)

Quick answer: Using the time value of money, what is the present value of $50,000 received 3 years from now, assuming a 6% annual discount rate?

A) $50,000 × (1.06)³
B) $50,000 ÷ (1.06)³ ≈ $41,981
C) $50,000 − (0.06 × 3 × 50,000)
D) $50,000 × 0.94³

Correct answer: B. Present value discounts a future sum back to today: PV = FV ÷ (1+r)ⁿ = $50,000 ÷ (1.06)³ ≈ $41,981. Option A performs the opposite operation (compounding forward, i.e. future value), a very common mix-up under time pressure. Engineering economics fundamentals like this sit inside Domain 2 and show up more often than most candidates expect — don't skip them because they feel like "finance," not "cost engineering."
